Automatically in the family calendar
In JH FamilySync, the holidays go into the family calendar automatically, for everyone in the family and every year, as soon as our data source lists them. When you set up the family, the app asks for your region straight away. It is free. In the app, holidays currently appear with their German names (for example “Herbstferien”).
- Open Settings
On the phone via your profile picture at the top left, on the computer in the sidebar.
- Calendar → School holidays
Under Choose country & region, tap your region.
- Apply school holidays
The holidays then appear in the calendar. You can tap any of them to edit or delete it.
- Public holidays too
Under Public holidays, choose your region and tap Apply region.
Source and date of the data
The data comes from the OpenHolidays API, the same source the app uses for school holidays and public holidays. Retrieved on 26 September 2026.
Contains information from the OpenHolidays API, which is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. The calendar files on this page are also available under the ODbL 1.0. The changes we make to the data are described in the licence notices (in German).
School holidays are set by the cantons and their municipalities. The EDK (Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education) publishes an official overview of all cantons, in German and French.
Frequently asked questions
When are the 2027 summer holidays in Switzerland?
It depends on the canton: according to our data source, in 2027 they start between 3 July (Appenzell Innerrhoden, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Bern, Lucerne and Zug) and 19 July (Zurich). For 13 cantons, the source does not yet list the 2027 summer holidays. The dates for each canton are in the table above.
Are school holidays the same in every municipality?
Not necessarily. School holidays are set by the cantons and their municipalities; the dates here show what applies to the canton. What your school says is binding.
How do I get the school holidays into my calendar?
In JH FamilySync, choose your region under Settings, Calendar, School holidays and tap “Apply school holidays”. The app enters the holidays for the whole family and adds the new dates every year. On each canton’s page you can also subscribe to the holidays as a calendar.
Where does the data come from?
From the OpenHolidays API, an open database of public and school holidays that the app also uses. The data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.
